Non-Surgical Knee Restoration

The Amazing Healing Ability of Supartz

Supartz is a hyaluronic acid replacement therapy commonly used to treat the joint pain of osteoarthritis. It is a solution of hyaluronate, a natural substance that cushions and lubricates a knee joint.  Synovial fluid in a healthy joint contains the body’s own hyaluronan which acts as a lubricant and shock absorber.
Osteoarthritis reduces the synovial fluid’s ability to protect and lubricate of a knee joint, which is what causes knee pain. Supartz helps nourish knee cartilage by replacing synovial fluid to keep the joint slippery.

Use of Supartz

Supartz is an FDA-approved treatment for osteoarthritis of the knee in those who have failed to respond to simple pain killers, exercise or physical therapy.
It is injected directly into the knee and can provide long-lasting pain relief with just a single course of treatment (five injections given once a week).

Source of Supartz

Supartz is a solution consisting of highly purified sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronan). Sodium hyaluronate is extracted from rooster combs. It is then formulated and sterilized into finished drug products that are commonly used in treatments and surgeries. Sodium hyaluronate is also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronan or hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in connective tissues of humans and animals. It plays a key role in cushioning and lubricating the body and is abundant in the eyes, joint, and heart valves. Most hyaluronic acid supplements are made from rooster combs.

The Effects of Supartz

A course of Supartz therapy can help relieve pain, improve mobility and get back to exercising. Exercising arthritic joints helps in reducing pain and fatigue, increasing range of motion, and helps to feel better overall.

Like all medicines, Supartz may cause minor side effects. Common side effects include back pain, mild bruising, heat, redness, swelling, or pain at the injection site, temporary achy feeling, and temporary knee inflammation. However, many people who received Supartz joint therapy experienced no or minor side effects.

Allergic reactions such as rash hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, and swelling of the mouth, face lips, or tongue may also occur. It is therefore important to seek medical attention immediately if severe adverse effects occur when using Supartz.

At your appointment, your doctor may use local anesthetic to numb your knee. Afterwards, Supartz will be injected into the joint space. You may be advised to refrain from doing strenuous activities for a couple of days after the injection.

Supartz Research

The safety and effectiveness of Supartz were observed in five clinical trials. Studies were conducted in Germany, Sweden, France, UK and Australia. 5 weekly injections of Supartz or salt water placebo were performed in one knee joint of each patient.

In the French study, there were 3 treatment groups: 5 Supartz injections per patient, 3 Supartz and 2 salt water injections per patient, or 5 salt water injections per patient.

In the result of five studies where 619 patients received Supartz and 537 received salt water, it was shown that five weekly injections of Supartz into the knee is both safe and effective in relieving pain associated with osteoarthritis of the knee that failed to respond with simple painkillers or exercise and physical therapy.
